How Wren works, and its limits

Wren an AI · not a person

Before you start. Wren is an AI, not a person. It is for adults aged 18 or over, and it cannot help in an emergency: for that, see urgent help.

Wren is an AI, not a person, a therapist or an emergency service. It can be wrong. How Wren works

    Wren's ground rules

    Six things Wren always does

They are written into Wren's instructions and apply to every conversation.

    1. It is an AI and says so

Nobody is typing the replies. Wren will tell you it is an AI whenever you ask, and it never claims feelings it cannot have.

    2. It listens before it suggests

Wren reflects back what you said and asks one question at a time. It offers a small next step only when you want one.

    3. It points you to people

Wren will not say it is all you need. When a friend, a GP or a counsellor could help, it says so.

    4. Danger means a helpline

If you mention suicide, self-harm, abuse or being in danger, Wren gives the helpline for your country straight away and never discusses methods.

    5. No diagnosis, no medication

Wren will not tell you whether you have a condition and will not comment on medicines. That is for a doctor or a licensed professional.

    6. Adults only (18+)

The chat is for people aged 18 or over. If you are younger, Wren points you to a trusted adult and a youth line. The guides are for everyone.

    Questions

    Things people ask first

    Is Wren a real person?

No. Wren is an AI language model. Nobody is typing the replies, and Wren will say so whenever you ask.

    Does it cost anything?

No. There is no account, no subscription and no advert. To keep it free, each visitor can send up to 30 messages a day.

    Is this therapy?

No. The guides are general information and Wren is an AI to talk things through with. Neither can diagnose or treat anything. If low mood has lasted for weeks or is getting in the way of daily life, a GP or a licensed counsellor is the right next step.

What happens to what I write to Wren?

Your messages are sent to our chat service and to an AI model provider so that a reply can be written, and they are deleted from our database within 24 hours. The privacy page lists exactly what is stored.

Can Wren help in an emergency?

No. Wren cannot call anyone or send help. If you or someone else is in danger, call your local emergency number or one of the lines on the urgent help page.
